Which Car Makes (almost) ALWAYS Pass the MOT?
We spotted this local paper article, talking about the most reliable car makes for passing the MOT test. And – surprise surprise – the winner was Ferrari!
It’s hardly a common make though, is it? And usually well beyond the reach of most people, especially with the cost of living being what it is. So, if you’re looking for a proper buyer’s guide to cars that most often pass the MOT test (without having to rob a bank), then we’ve made some “adjustments”, shall we say – to reflect the real world that the majority of us live in.
The original list was made by Go Compare, who took a sample from the Government records on MOT test results (the sample was from 3.6 million MOT records, from 2021-22). And here it is – the “official” top ten most reliable cars for passing the MOT test:
- Ferrari – 94% pass rate
- Bentley – 91.6% pass rate
- Porsche – 88.35% pass rate
- Tesla – 87.08% pass rate
- Lexus – 86.86% pass rate
- Dacia – 84.96% pass rate
- BMW – 84.11% pass rate
- Audi – 83.7% pass rate
- Skoda – 84% pass rate
- Suzuki – 83.69% pass rate
Now, they did add a “normal” list to their study – and found that the VW T-Roc has an MOT test pass rate of 95%, making it the single most reliable model of car to be tested.
So, considering this, let’s adjust a “true” representation of MOT test passers…
We took Go Compare’s data and removed all “luxury” brands. We then scanned this list from GrarageWire to fill in the blanks, sticking to our “no premium brands” rule.

So… As you might be able to tell, this isn’t exactly scientific. We’ve only taken the lists made by others and binned off any “luxury” brands (like Bentley, Ferrari, Porsche, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz). But you know, it’s actually quite accurate, in our experience at least.
Hyundai makes a shockingly good car, considering the cost of buying one – easily on par with, or better than, many German-made cars. Don’t be fooled by the badges, though. Any make or model of car can go wrong and fail the MOT test. Even Ferraris fail 6% of the time!
Is it worth basing your next car on this?
Not really – it’s just quite interesting. Proper care and maintenance are the best way to ensure your car passes the MOT test, and while some brands might have more of a reputation for reliability than others, that doesn’t translate into safety and MOT checks.
